Changes in Microsoft Action Pack: The End of the Internal Use Rights (IUR) for Partners

Microsoft has announced significant changes to its partner program, specifically the retirement of the Internal Use Rights (IUR) privileges that partners receive in the Microsoft Action Pack, and included with a competency.

While Microsoft hasn’t yet provided details on the rationale behind the changes, it has indicated that they are part of a larger directional change in their marketing strategy.

What does this mean for partners?

Under these changes, Gold and Silver partners will no longer have access to free software licences, long-considered an important partner benefit and a key incentive to attaining Gold and Silver status, or committing to the MAP. The changes will come into effect on July 1, 2020.

Product licenses included with competencies will become specific to the competency you attain, effective October 1, 2019.

Microsoft has said that it will be updating product license use rights for demonstration purposes, solution/services development, and internal training.

What’s the word in the Microsoft ecosystem?

Reactions to the changes have been mixed, with some companies feeling that the changes downgrade the value proposition, while others acknowledge that Microsoft has always invested heavily in its partners and suggest that this is part of its transition in partner business investments.

And what does the IAMCP say?

The IAMCP leadership is not jumping to conclusions prior to meeting with Microsoft leaders at Inspire to understand what is driving the changes and what partners can expect, moving forward.

As a member advocate, IAMCP International President, Sergio Baptista, together with Randy Steinle, IAMCP International MIST Committee Chair, has announced the formation of a special team to seek understanding on how these changes will affect partner businesses, and provide unified global feedback to Microsoft.
